📜 AltaWorld Events Code of Conduct: Professional Communication & Inclusion
This section outlines the standards for communication and professional behavior expected of all participants—attendees, speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and staff—at any AltaWorld event, including the Women in Insurance Tech Conference.
1. Anti-Discrimination and Harassment Policy
AltaWorld is dedicated to providing an inclusive, respectful, and harassment-free environment. Discrimination, harassment, or verbal abuse based on any protected characteristic is strictly prohibited.
Prohibited comments and behaviors include, but are not limited to:
- Discrimination: Comments or actions related to race, color, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, or veteran status.
- Sexism and Ageism: Making generalizations, dismissive, or derogatory remarks about any group, specifically including women and age-based categories (e.g., using gender-specific language like “that guy” repeatedly when referring to leadership in a mixed-gender setting).
- Inappropriate Generalizations about Employment Status: Derogatory, unfounded, or professionally damaging statements that generalize about the character or performance of individuals based on their current employment status (e.g., stating that individuals who are “out of work, unhappy where they are, or looking for a new job” are universally not “top performers”).
2. Standards of Professional Communication and Respect
All presentations and professional discourse must be conducted with respect, integrity, and self-awareness.
- Respect for the Audience: Presenters must be mindful of the room’s composition, the session’s context, and the professional dignity of all participants.
- Promotion of Inclusive Values: All content, especially from speakers and presenters, must reflect and promote the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion that AltaWorld stands for. The content should not promote or justify exclusionary hiring practices or social segregation in the workplace.
- Professional Decorum: Speakers are expected to maintain professional composure and respect. This includes appearance and demeanor (e.g., “button up your shirt”) and avoiding arrogance, bravado, or overly combative language that diminishes the professionalism of the event.
3. Intervention and Consequences
- Right to Intervene: Organizers, staff, and attendees have the right and are encouraged to politely and professionally interrupt presentations or conversations where violations of this code occur to correct the behavior and protect the professional environment.
- Consequences of Violation: Individuals who violate this Code of Conduct, particularly speakers or panelists, will be subject to immediate action, including being required to cease the presentation, immediate removal from the event without refund, and potential exclusion from future AltaWorld events.
